Mi Lanting was launched with MIUI 8 in 2016, making Xiaomi the third manufacturer to customize Chinese fonts for mobile devices.
In 2019, Mi Lanting Pro was introduced with MIUI 11. Originally featuring three font weights, it upgraded to ten. By adding variable font technology, Xiaomi became the first smartphone manufacturer in the world to introduce variable fonts into the system. MIUI 11 also included innovative functions such as dynamic font weight and smart bolding.
In 2021, MiSans was introduced in MIUI 13. Font specifications and details received comprehensive upgrades and OpenType Features was added. On the release day, it was announced that MiSans would be a global free commercial-use font.
MiSans Global, a worldwide font customization project, was launched in the new Xiaomi HyperOS system in 2023. This is an enormous font family that covers over 20 writing systems and supports more than 600 languages and 100,000 characters.
MiSans not only serves hundreds of millions of Xiaomi mobile device users, but is also open to designers. The public can use the font for free. Since its release in late 2021, MiSans has been used by more individuals and businesses in brand and system designs and commercial projects. At the same time, we are constantly improving and updating MiSans fonts. This includes adding more languages and texts to cover more commonly used Chinese characters and provide the best usage experience possible. Xiaomi has been devoted to designing system fonts for many years. Mi Lanting Pro and MiSans have won numerous international design awards such as Red Dot Design Award 2019, iF Design Award 2023 and HiiiBrand 2023.
A crucial carrier of information, fonts also play a key role in system design esthetics. They also impact information density and a user's willingness to read. Using fonts correctly and logically in interface design can be crucial to the overall visuals. Clear layers and readability are two principles of font design. In addition, we have aimed to create consistent information experiences across terminals as our device collection grows. By combining human factors and ergonomics research and application scenarios, we defined font size specifications, line length and spacing, in addition to establishing comprehensive system typography specifications.
